Our Team
I struggled with mobility on the left side of my body at a young age. By the age of 5, I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. My whole life I’ve had to adapt every physical activity to make it possible for me to do. I started practicing yoga after decades of living with chronic pain. Mainstream yoga classes were too difficult for me. Getting up and down off the floor was not possible at the time, so I started taking private yoga lessons. Working around my knee’s lack of mobility, my yoga teacher showed me how to move my body in a chair rather than on the floor. She taught me how to look at yoga postures from different angles. I gained so much confidence in my body as I learned how to practice in a different way. I used what I learned to rehabilitate after a long, overdue knee replacement. My love for my body grew as I gained confidence and strength. I was hooked and wanted to learn more! My quest for knowledge sent me to Yoga Teacher Training where my yoga journey first began.
My intention with Chair Yoga is to challenge students’ ideas of their mobility. The chair offers a space between standing and sitting on the floor making it an accessible yoga class for everyone. Each class focuses on building strength, balance, and flexibility.
The intensity of the class is entirely up to the student.
Melinda teaches our Prop-asana classes, previously known as Chair yoga. This class can be surprisingly challenging and is a great way to build strength and mobility while learning creative and fun ways to practice poses (asanas.)
When she's not teaching yoga, Melinda is also a Co-owner of Avenge Your Hair Studio in Broad Ripple and is an incredible hairstylist. Her Instagram shares both her yoga updates as well as her hair studio information. Check it out!
